Larkin House

The strength of historic Monterey are these walled gardens that one stumbles upon... This one belonged to Thomas Oliver Larkin (1802-1858), the first and only United States Consul to California when it was a far-flung foreign territory. That lasted for about four years until the Gold Rush brought California U.S. statehood in 1850.

General Sherman's old headquarters, next door.
