Today I went to what was the Howard Johnson's that we frequented as kids to enjoy such fare as fried clams and milkshakes. Now that I am older and vegetarian, it seemed appropriate to try out its new incarnation, Tofu: Chinese & Japanese Restaurant. Instead of fried clams, I had vegetable tempura and seaweed salad. The seaweed was good, the tempura was average, but best of all was the nostalgia factor. Just being in that space for the first time since... who knows, 1975? That zeitgeist is still there for me. Sometimes reconnecting with a lost part of oneself is the best meal of all.
