I have been driving past this fine octagonal building in Mattituck all my life and appreciating it both for itself and for signifying the beginning of the North Fork. Thanks to the wonder of Wikipedia, I now know that it is the Andrew Gildersleeve Octagonal Building, also known as Octagon House, built in 1854 and thankfully now on the National Register of Historic Places.
