I did not realize, but should have, that the branches of
Sweet Gum or
Sweetgum trees (both are apparently correct), also known as
Liquidambar styraciflua, are sometimes winged, much like a Euonymus. These branches photographed today in Louisiana by Kate.

I live northeastern Ohio and in my side yard woods I have this winged sweetgum tree. It is a great tree except in a moderate wind it will generate noise like very high wind. One would think a tornado was coming from the sky.
