
Our boat's destination was
Chalmette Battlefield, the site where Andrew Jackson's army, supported by a rag tag assembly of swamp-savvy Creoles, pirates, Africans and Indians repelled the more polished British forces in 1815. Also known as the
Battle of New Orleans, it is considered the decisive U.S. victory of the
War of 1812. Speaking of pirates, Chalmette is part of
Jean Lafitte National Historical Park.
Seen above is the striking Malus-Beauregard House, built in 1830 and last occupied by the son of Civil War General P.G.T. Beauregard.
