Arundo donax

Sometimes you stand by a large stand of Arundo (Arundo donax) -- an invasive, bamboo-like member of the grass family that chokes rivers. And sometimes you stand by the river being choked -- in this case the Salinas River.
Two comments about Arundo. First, it is an example of a fiercely invasive, destructive weed that is also aesthetically appealing -- a paradox I have sometimes pondered. Secondly, it is possible to confuse the name "Arundo" with the character of Stella-Rondo from the Eudora Welty short story Why I Live at the P.O. This I know from experience.
