Sometimes when it's cold and the trees are bare you head east, away from the city, and stop in Cold Spring Harbor (above) - mainly to show someone that it exists - then proceed to Huntington where you have a nice meal at Spice Village, browse in the fabulous Book Revue book store, learn about stevia-sweetened soft drinks at Capitol Health, and take note that the Starbucks has a fireplace. I have always found this area to be one of the more civilized corners of Long Island.
