I had imagined that the Gulf of Mexico would be relatively placid compared to an ocean. I was wrong. The waves were a good seven to ten feet high, and the ship rocked enough to induce one of those subtle states of trepidation. The ship sailed directly south -- from New Orleans to the Yucatan -- and directly through the center of the Gulf. No land was visible for an entire day.
