Speaking of the Polygonaceae family, another roadside discovery that summer was something called "mile-a-minute weed" -- Persicaria perfoliata -- a fast growing invasive weed (as the name suggests) hailing from tropical Asia, possessing distinctively triangular leaves and barbed stems that spread as a vine over other shrubs. Evidently it is popular with certain bugs, who turn the leaves into swiss cheese.

They look like green, swiss cheese moths.
