tarantula hawk

Back in California I had the good fortune to encounter this tarantula hawk, a beautiful and extraordinary creature going about its business on a sunny roadside. Although known to deliver the second most painful sting in the world, they are not aggressive to humans. Instead the sting is intended for a tarantula, whom the female kills so as to lay a single egg in. It is one of those bizarre storylines of nature. Adults are approximately two inches long.
