We drove along a long section of coastline that used to be banana plantations back in the day when United Fruit dominated the Costa Rican economy. Apparently when a blight wiped out the banana crop in the 1940's, African Palms were planted instead for the production of palm oil. The buildings and infrastructure set up by United Fruit remain.
